Mary Jane Ward grew up in Indiana and spent most of her life in Evanston. She went to Northwestern University located in Evanston. This is a semi-autobiographical account of a period in her life when she was hospitalized for a mental breakdown, seemingly caused by difficulties in getting her work published and money worries with her husband. She was, probably erroneously, diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was an author and beginning in 1937 was a book reviewer for the Evanston News-Index.
