George Heisler, one of the escapees, is a communist; the narrative follows his travels across the countryside and to the rare citizen who is willing to take him in for a night. The other six escapees are gradually captured. The Seven Crosses refer to trees which are used for a subtle torture when the escaped prisoners are returned.
