This opera house was built for the city of Venice under the architectural guidance of Giannantonio Selva. It opened on May 17, 1792 under the name La Fenice - the phoenix. As optimistic a name it may have been, it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from December 12 - 13, 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire.
