The period this book covers was a key century in the history of Irish art due to a growing demand for independence in Ireland in the late 19th century. While artists were creating a new national imagery, Irish literature was coming from W. B. Yeats, J. M. Synge, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett. The first part of this book is an introduction tracing the influences and trends affecting young Irish artists. This absorbing section shows some artists moving to the artist colonies of France, coming under the influence of the Impressionist Movement. The second section contains brief biographies of 52 artists and Illustrates important aspects of their work as it develops through this significant era. All is illustrated, the first part having black & white and color figures. The second section has plates in full color (unless they were done in black & white). There are 116 color plates and 61 black & white plates. An index is included. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 228 pages
