Seven men imprisoned in the Westhofen camp decide to attempt an escape. George Heisler, one of the escapees, is a communist; the narrative follows his travels across the countryside and to the rare citizen who is willing to take him in for a night. The other six escapees are gradually captured. The Seven Crosses refer to trees which are used for a subtle torture when the escaped prisoners are returned. A film by MGM, and starring Spencer Tracy, was produced from this book. 338 pages, red cloth binding. The corners are very slightly bent in, and the spine is slightly darkened. The ffep has the name of the first owner written in with 1942 as the date. The page tops are stained blue. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
