The expeditions traced in this book are to West Africa in part for a wildlife survey of Senegal, Gambia, and the Ivory Coast. Eastward to Zaire in search of the rare Congo peacock, and in early 1986 the author returned to central Africa with an ecologist. This is a lyrical and sobering account of vanishing worlds and what is replacing them. Through Matthiessen's eyes we see elephants, white rhinos, gorillas, and other endangered creatures in the wild. We share the drama of the journeys themselves, and are made aware of the human lives oppressed by bankrupt political regimes and threatened by the ravaging of land and wildlife. The ivory marbled binding is fine, as is the heavy flecked dust jacket. The end papers are maps. 225 pages, no marks or tears. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
