Adapted from a Czech opera, this is a clever story with wonderful Sendak illustrations. Two children discover one morning that their mother is ill, so they rush to town to get her some milk. Their attempt to raise money by singing is thwarted by Brundibar, who is a bullying, bellowing hurdy-gurdy grinder. He tyrannizes the town square and chases all other street musicians away. The children are befriended by three smart talking animals and 300 helpful schoolkids; they sing for the money, buy the milk, defeat the bully, and triumphantly return home. The binding is brown cloth with black and gold type. The jacket has very light wear at the spine end. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall
