1 Brodie, Allan; Croom, Jane; Davies, James O English Prisons an Architectural History
1873592531 / 9781873592533; This volume is the result of the first systematic written and photographic survey of English prisons since the early 20th century. It traces the history of the purpose-built prison and its development over the past 200 years. Over 130 establishments that make up the current prison estate and over 100 former sites that have surviving buildings or extensive documentation have been investigated. Institutions ranging from medieval castles and military camps to country houses that have beent taken over and adapted for penal use are included. Some of the prisons are round or several-sided. The Prison Service granted the project team unprecedented access to all of its jails, allowing the compilation of over 5, 000 images and 250 research files. They were allowed to go anywhere, photograph (almost) anything, and speak with inmates. A selection of images from the archive illustrate this book. Includes a listing of prisons, references and select bibliography, notes and index. Fully illustrated in color, this book includes architectural plans (photographed) or drawings for many of the prisons. Black cloth cover and full-color jacket; the jacket has a minor wrinkle on the back lower corner at the spine (from the publisher) . ; 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall; ABE

2 Finn, Dallas Meiji Revisited: the Sites of Victorian Japan
0834802880 / 9780834802889; This is a beautiful cloth-bound volume. During the Meiji period (1868-1912) the Japanese laid the foundations for what is now the most advanced nation in Asia. Like Victorian Britian, a potent model, Meiji Japan was characterized by faith in progress, civilization and the growth of empire. The architecture and feats of engineering described and illustrated in this volume stand as monuments to the dynamism and ambitions of the age, and to Japan's transformation from an isolated feudal society into a modern and remarkable cosmopolitan nationan-state. Factories and schools, palaces and prisons, private homes, churches, hospitals, railways, canals, bridges, shipyards, parks, and museums are presented with careful attention to both the nuances of their design and construction and their broader significance to the people who built and used them. Includes a guide to Meiji sites and an extensive index. ; 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall; BIBLIO

4 Romanelli, Giandomenico; Pugliese, Giuseppe; Sasportes, Jose; Veroli, Patrizia Gran Teatro La Fenice
3822870625 / 9783822870624; This opera house was built for the city of Venice under the architectural guidance of Giannantonio Selva. It opened on May 17, 1792 under the name La Fenice - the phoenix. As optimistic a name it may have been, it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from December 12 - 13, 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire. In less than a year, La Fenice had risen from the ashes once again to become a leading institution in the world of music for more than a century and a half. Then, in 1996, during the nights of January 29-30, catastrophe struck once more and, within a short time, La Fenice was all but razed. This publication charts two centuries of musical history at the Gran Teatro La Fenice, from the great operas of the nineteenth century to contemporary music and modern dance, from Rossini and Verdi to Ligeti and Pina Bausch. It is the first complete chronicle of all the operas, concerts and festivals held at the Gran Teatro, and also includes a detailed architectural history, with many illustrations plans, sketches and period engravings. It pays homage not only to the past, but above all to the spirit of hope infusing the current reconstruction on what is surely one of the world's most beautiful opera houses. Printed on heavy paper. The book and jacket are new, but due to the weight the jacket has sustained a few tears. There is a small fold with two tiny tears at the bottom back; a 1" tear at the spine top, and the corners are lightly worn. In a protective cover, this book is over 5 1/2 lbs.; Folio - over 12 - 15" tall

5 Van Loon, Hendrik Willem The Arts
First Edition. This is a fascinating survey of art through history. It begins with prehistoric art and moves through the ages and countries that made certain types of art famous. This book was written and illustrated by Hendrik Willem Van Loon to give the general reader (who perhaps had always considered this a rather remote subject) a better understanding and a greater appreciation of everything that has been done within the realm of painting and architecture and music, sculpture and the theater and most of the so-called minor arts from the beginnning of time until the moment we come so close to them that we begin to lose our perspective. The front endpapers chart the advances in art by time periods. The back endpapers chart it with associations to the type of clothing people wore. All is hand-written. 677 pages including a section on 'How to Use This Book', Musical Illustrations, and an index. Well-illustrated in color - an unusual book! The label on the spine has been taped at the vertical edges. A top corner is slightly bent in, and the spine ends have wear; the bottom is fraying a bit. The spine is slightly sunned. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
