1 Clifford, William (edited by) The Whole Wide World
This fascinating treasury of great travel writings includes 72 double-page full color illustrations and over 100 half tones. The photographs are beautiful, the writing is superb. Although this book is from the '60's the places I've been to recently held up quite nicely in their descriptions. For places I'll never go the illustrations and vivid writing, along with quotes here and there as appropriate, make for a wonderful book to sink into for an evening. 456 pages, all clean and bright. Could be used in home teaching. The cloth binding is tight but slightly cocked. The jacket top is worn, especially at the corners where there are small tears. Slight shelfwear at the bottom. The spine top is worn with a small tear in front and about a 1" tear in the back. The bottom spine is chipped. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

2 Conefrey, Mick; Jordan, Tim Icemen: a History of the Arctic and it's Explorers
0752224476 / 9780752224473; A hundred years ago the Arctic was a blank space on the map, as remote and unattainable as the moon. Its explorers were a strange breed of men: proud, uncompromising and eccentric. Some of them found glory, others were never seen again. This book tells their strange and compelling stories. 14 pages of photographs, as far back as 1909. Includes a postscript, bibliography, and index. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

3 Freuchen, Peter Book of the Eskimos
Peter Freuchen spent considerable time with the Eskimos, from his first to Greenland in 1906 up to the time of his death in 1957. Not only was he very concerned with the life and health of the Eskimos, he enjoyed their company and they enjoyed his, treating him as an equal while hunting. He married an Eskimo woman, who apparently died about 10 years later. His third wife wrote a knowledgeable preface to this book. Having read a little of it, Freuchen wrote expanding on his notes from his trips and it is very readable, like talking to a friend in a cozy setting. The cover is illustrated, as is the spine. The spine ends are wrinkled, the top front corner is worn and the other corners are a bit curled in. The blue cloth has sunned a bit, front and back, and there is a damp stain which does not go through to the text. The spine is also lightly sunned but very clean. This is a BOMC volume. Photos, decorated endpapers. 14 pages of photos. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

8 Tucker, Michael Living in a Foreign Language: a Memoir of Food, Wine, and Love in Italy
0802143628 / 9780802143624; Michael Tucker, well-known for his acting role on the television series L. A. Law, wrote this fun-filled travelogue set in the Italian hill town, Spoleto. The memoir begins when he and his wife bought a small cottage nestled in the Umbrian countryside. Putting aside their frenetic American life and immersing themselves in la dolce vita, Michael and Jill Eikenberry, also an actor, endeavored to learn the language, understand the nuances of Italian culture, and build a home in this new chapter of their lives. Written with an epicurean's delight in detail and a gourmand's appreciation for all things fine, this is the ideal book for anyone who has ever dreamed of moving to Italy. Lots of black & white photos. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall
