Principles of Morals and Legislation, Bentham Esq. , M. A. , Jeremy
2 Bentham Esq. , M. A. , Jeremy Principles of Morals and Legislation
This volume was released from the Lamont Library of the Harvard College Library. It was purchased from the fund given by Robert Parker Clapp, class of 1879, for books on economics. The following is on the copyright page: NOTE: The First Edition of this work was printed in the year 1780 and first published in 1789. The present Edition is a careful reprint of 'A New Edition, corrected by the Author, ' which was published in 1823. The preface is fascinating; it discusses the first publication and all of the errors found by the author and others, this originating as an introduction to a plan of a penal code in terminis. In this volume his research covers the whole field of legislation. Covered in black cloth, the corners have some wear, greater wear at the spine ends, and rubbing to the boards. Annotations are printed along with light marginalia and underlining with pencil. The back library pouch was removed a bit untidily. A few pages are a bit loose, otherwise the binding is quite good. ; 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall

6 Hunt, J. N. Progressive Course in Spelling, Complete

There is a 1/4" hole on the spine front. 7 Kaplan, Robert; Kaplan, Ellen The Art of the Infinite: the Pleasures of Mathematics
019514743X / 9780195147438; NEW - The Kaplans take us on a witty, literate and accessible tour of the world of mathematics. This book looks at infinity, in its countless guises, as a touchstone for understanding mathematical thinking. Tracing a path rom Pythagoras, whose great Theorem led inexorably to a discovery that his followers tried to keep secret (the existence of irrational numbers) ; through Descartes and Leibniz; to the brilliant, haunted Georg Cantor, who proved that infinity can come in different sizes, the Kaplans show how the attempt to grasp the ungraspable embodies the essence of mathematics. This volume shows us someof the ways that Man has grappled with All, and reveals mathematics as one of the most exhilirating expressions of the human imagination. 324 pages including an index and appendix. Binding is quarter cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

11 Lowenthal, David No Liberty for License : the Forgotten Logic of the First Amendment
0965320847 / 9780965320849; In this original reassessment of the First Amendment, the distinguished political philosopher David Lowenthal reaches unorthodox yet compelling conclusions about the place of free speech and religion in the American constitutional order. Professor Lowenthal demonstrates that the framers of the Constitution and Bill of Rights had an understanding of freedom quite different from that to which we have grown accustomed. They recognized that freedom without limits degenerates into mere license, itself a threat to freedom. 315 pages, including index. Heavy boards. Prior owners name blacked out on inside cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

This reader is teacher's edition. There is a communication - from author to teacher, and at the beginning of each new section or story there is a short explanation of what one will learn reading that piece. 16 McGuire, Edna and Phillips, Claude Anderson Adventuring in Young America
This is a small text book about how Colonial America. Using interesting language, some illustrations, and quizzes one can learn quite a bit from this little book. The frontispiece is in color, the other drawings in black & white. The subjects are split into three parts: 1) How the Colonists came to America; 2) Home Life in Colonial Days; 3) How the Pioneers lived. This appears to have been a teacher's copy or a smart kid because where one is to begin is noted in pencil. There is a notation by a prior owner that she was 10 years old when she had this book. After the quizzes or tests, there are ideas in each chapter on an activity that relates to what was just learned. Very interesting, good for home schooling because these things haven't changed. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
