I'm happy when alone, it's true/but how much happier with you, and you. /So many I would welcome, if they came, /but keep returning to a certain name This is a wonderful collection of poems of all types; the writer was born in 1913 and so has had a full life to write about! 121 pages including notes. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

5 Connell, Jr. , Evan S. Notes from a Bottle Found on the Beach At Carmel
This work was first published in Contact, San Francisco's magazine of arts and letters. This is the first printing in book form. It is written in verse, and was reviewed by Kenneth Lamott, as follows: In Notes From a Bottle, Even Connell emerges as a cartographer of the darkest continent of all, the spirit of man. The journey on which he takes us is through a fearsome land that has lost its dimension of time, where we encounter as contemporaries the explorers of Vineland, the warriors of World War II, the ancient Etruscans, the Perpetrators of the Hiroshima bomb, medieval alchemists, the saints, martyrs, and great heretics of the church, the builders of Chichen Itza, the conquistadores, composers of the Vedas, and the operators and victims of the gas chambers. We find this work beautiful, unforgettable, profoundly disturbing, and curiously pertinent to the spiritual dilemma in which we find ourselves in the midst of this century. . . . The cloth binding is ivory with a stamped design on the front. The spine is tanned with a few small spots on the back. The jacket consists of the inside flaps; the rest is missing. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

' The first stanza of one of many poems in this book. 10 Koethe, John The Constructor
0060956356 / 9780060956356; This secret life/ Whose language is the melancholy sound the heart makes/ Beating against its cage': this is John Koethe's subject in his beautifully constructed and deeply moving new book of poems - lyrics of the dark and painfully honest inward gaze. Koethe, a philosopher by training, knows that meditation is more than just random reflection, that it is a disciplined exercise culminating in a hard-won and hence exhiliarating self-knowledge. " - Marjorie Perloff 61 pages, includes 18 poems. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

14 Tennyson, Alfred Selections from the Idylls of the King
Tennyson's poems were edited by Mary F. Willard, a principal at a Chicago school that has since disappeared. The binding is near fine with the slightest wear at the spine, top and bottom. One set of sentences is bracketed in pencil near the beginning of the book, and there may be others because they are almost too light to see. Light pencil marks appear on the inside covers and first three pages (two are blank) as though some child was given this scrawl on. 196 pages of poetry, 24 pages of notes (in even smaller print) and two pages of advertisements for other Eclectic English Classics. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

15 Wright, Charles Appalachia
0374105715 / 9780374105716; Almost thirty years ago, Charles Wright began a poetic project of Dantean scope - a trilogy of trilogies. This book is the last of the third trilogy, the first two books being Chickamauga and continued in Black Zodiac, which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. The final book in this great work shows us a master poet's confrontation with his own mortality and his stunning ability to discover transcendence in the most beautifully ordinary of landscapes. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
