1 The Art of Ivan Gantschev: the Sun, the Moon, and Other Things
1558582312 / 9781558582316; Gantschev's beautiful, sometimes abstract artwork is featured here along with a small note of the medium (s) used. Often paints are done in water color, often colored pencil is added. "The world is wonderful and I want to paint it again and again. We walk through this world with our three-dimensional faculty of thought. Some say that there is a fourth dimension. Is it possible to make the invisible visible by painting the visible, concrete things? Is that the fourth dimension or is that art?" About half of the illustrations were done for books, and as such are particularly inventive. The binding is heavy cardboard using the rippled portion. There is a cut-out in this where part of a painting on heavy cardboard shows through. This cover is covered with a heavy clear cover, which has a tiny dent in it at the top, and some rubbing on the back. This book is one that is pleasant to page through, the paintings are beautiful and some have surprise elements that are also attractive. ; 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall

2 Ambesi, Alberto Cesare Oceanic Art
0600367029 / 9780600367024; From the time of the first Pacific explorers, the Western World has been fascinated by the romance of the South Seas. The natives of this earthly paradise inhabit a world of surprising complexity. Their lives are bounded by myths and legends which vary from area to area but are intimately dependent on the power of supernatural forces. This book is the key to this enthralling world where a prow ornament becomes the guardian spirit of a ship, a statuette becomes an ever-watchful ancestor and a painted mask becomes the temporary residence of a god. 159 pages, including 71 full color plates that depict the drama and mystery which are the essentials of Oceanic art. The heavy paper is glossy and the plates are bright. The binding has yellowed a bit on the edges. The binding has a tiny tear on the left front bottom near the spine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Fauve Birds, Butterflies, and Flowers, Artists
3 Artists Fauve Birds, Butterflies, and Flowers
382903895X / 9783829038959; NEW-The Fauves were the sensation of Paris in the early years of the 20th century. A group of artists surrounding Matisse, they earned their name - which literally means "wild beast" - for their use of intense, arbitrary color. When Diaghilev's Ballets russes took Paris by storm in 1909, , the costumes designed by Leon Bakst in a Fauvist manner set off a fashion rage that was to last through the 1920s. These brilliant textile designed, created mostly in Paris betweeen 1910 and 1920, capture the spirit of those adventurous times. Includes twelve full-color designs; each tear-out sheet is four times book size. In English, German and French. Still in shrink wrap. ; Folio - over 12 - 15" tall

Signed, Abiah Rose, Browning, Diane
6 Browning, Diane Signed, Abiah Rose
Abiah Rose has always wanted to paint pictures. Everyone told her it was not a good thing to do. Serious painting is "not girl's workd. " Best not show your paintings. Best not sign them either. But still Abiah continues to make her mark on each of her paintings: A small, hidden rose. A moving story of feminine strength and perseverance, Signed, Abiah Rose honors the everyday struggles of anonymous women artists whose only encouragement was their own inborn drive to create. 9 D'Auria, Sue; Lacovara, Peter; Roehring, Catharine H. Mummies & Magic: the Funerary Arts of Ancient Egypt
0878463038 / 9780878463039; This exhibit was originally conceived and shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Working with the Dallas Museum of Art, they developed a long-term loan of the many Egyptian articles that Boston had no space to show. This catalog is a reprint of the Boston show, containing additional color images included in the Dallas exhibit. The topic embraces a broad spectrum of Egyptian life, and the Egyptians' beliefs about death and the dead. Through the study of actual mummies we can learn their ages at death, their medical and dental histories, and the diseases from which they suffered. By extension, the study of burials and tomb chapels, the art and architecture of tombs, and accompanying burial equipment provide the scholar with a rich and rewarding trove of information. 276 pages including an index, bibliography and abbreviations. Well illustrated, 8 pages of color. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

8870686736 / 9788870686739; This is a wonderful little art book, one of a set, that features Landscapes. Written in Italian, most of the pages include a landscape from a famous artist (indicated) . Some have different views on each page, and the middle page has a window to view the same area in different ways. There are a few pages that are cleart for interesting parts or the whole of a painting; one Magritte painting shows how he perfectly paints a scene out of the window. All are very interesting and incorporate humor; in the back is a listing of each artist, work included from that person, and the museum or private collection from which it comes. Anne Vallayer-Coster Painter to the Court of Marie-Antoinette, Kahng, Eik; Roland Michel, Marianne
17 Kahng, Eik; Roland Michel, Marianne Anne Vallayer-Coster Painter to the Court of Marie-Antoinette
NEW - STILL IN PUBLISHERS PLASTIC. Anne Valleyer-Coster (1744-1818) was a French rococo-era painter, which is a light, elaborate and decorative style of art. Despite the negative reputation that still-life painting had at this time, Vallayer-Coster's highly developed skills, especially in the depiction of flowers, soon generated a great deal of attention from collectors and other artists. Her "precocious talent and the rave reviews" earned her the attention of the court, where Marie Antoinette took a particular interest in Vallayer-Coster's paintings. These are paintings that Vallayer-Coster did for the court of Marie Antoinette. 256 pages. 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" tall

18 Kennon, Kevin; Gandelsonas, Mario; Butler, Ruth The Rodin Museum, Seoul
1568982356 / 9781568982359; This museum was intended to house two major works and is, therefore, not very big. But the beauty is in the design - one gets the feeling that there is light all around because the small building is made of varying amounts of translucent glass. This book shows not only photographs of the beautiful finished product, but of the steps taken and drawings of the proposed museum. It is tucked into a corner over which there is a tall building, but it is not affected by the building, nor the 8 lanes of expressway traffic zooming past (there's an amazing photo of this! ) . It is meant to be a place of quiet contemplation. A beautiful book, an interesting read, and a striking museum are all contained in this volume. This 11 1/2" wide book is bound in grey cloth, and the heavy dust jacket folds over at the top and bottom, as well as the edges. 95 pages, including several full-color photographs which are marvelous! 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

19 King, Ross Michelangelo & the Pope's Ceiling
0965701476 / 9780965701471; This is the book about how Michelangelo came to be involved with the Sistine chapel, how the chapel came to be, and his relationship with Pope Julius II. The Pope had planned to have his body kept in a great tomb designed by Michelangelo. However, when it was discovered that the Vatican was out of true by six feet, he determined that the place he had chosen, St. Peters, was in no fit state to accommodate such an impressive monument. In his usual grand way, Pope Julius II had St. Peters demolished, and the Sistine Chapel was built upon that site. So the story begins, fascinating from the first chapter to the last. Includes notes, bibliography, and an index. Black and white illustrations can be found throughout the book, and there are seven pages in color, and a diagram of the paintings, including the artists' names. The front cover has a very minor bend in the upper right-hand corner. Written by the author of Brunelleschi's Dome. ; 373 pages

20 Lash, John The Hero: Manhood and Power
0500810478 / 9780500810477; Out of the darkness, out of the primeval forest, comes the hero who will save the world. He is the protector, the man of invincible might. The greatest names in history and mythology of all races are those of heroes - Herakles and Samson, Perseus and St. George - who fought with monsters to rescue the eternal Woman, the princess, the anima. But the nature of these monsters changed. First, the quest turned inward, taking love, intimacy, and moral self-improvement as its aims. Eventually, it moved outward again, shifting towards the far horizons of territorial expansion and intellectual invention. In this wide-ranging and deeply meditated book, John Lash brings the values of epic and myth to bear upon the cult of the hero, which, rightfully used, has led to the highest that a culture can conceive. Misused, it has led to tyranny, violence, and death. Includes further reading. 132 illustrations, 16 in full color. ; 4to - over 9 3/4 - 12" wide

The "Lost" Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany, McKean, Hugh F.
24 McKean, Hugh F. The "Lost" Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany
0385095856 / 9780385095853; There are special Tiffany pieces not well known - the "lost" works of Louis Tiffany himself, that are, in a real sense, the core of his astonishing achievement. They comprise his personal portfolio - objects made from his original designs for exhibition, private commissions for the studios, or for use in Tiffany's own homes. Many have vanished outright, accidentally or purposely destroyed in the years following Tiffany's death. Many have remained unidentified, and many are simply neglected today. This book re-evaluates his art in terms of his personal work - stained glass, mosaics, blown glass, pottery, jewelry, and enamels. Tiffany's efforts in interior design are covered, as are his easel paintings and his doomed but inspired dream to create a permanent residence retreat for working artists. Over 200 color plates and over 60 black & white photos present a vivid display of Tiffany's wide-ranging aesthetic. This is a rare portrait. Bound in black cloth, the page bottoms have a few gray spots. The jacket has been price-clipped, is shelf worn on the edges with chipped corners and spine ends. Also a triangular tear on the front at the fold, along with a 1" tear and a 1 1/4" tear on the back and wear along the folds. Includes extensive bibliography and index. 25 McKean, Hugh F. The Lost Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany
0385095856 / 9780385095853; The works of Tiffany Studios revolutionized interior design in turn-of-the-century America, and all of the works - from stained glass windows to blown-glass vases, lamp shades to inkwells - bore the unique stamp of Louis Comfort Tiffany, who created the Studios and supervised every aspect of their production. Many of these pieces are well-known today, but there are special pieces, some not well known - the "lost" works of Tiffany himself - that are, in a real sense, the core of his astonishing achievement. Black cloth binding with gilt lettering on front and spine. Decorated end papers, and over 200 full-color plates and photographs of Tiffany's work.
