3 Martin, John The Dance the Story of the Dance in Pictures and Text
In magnificent pictures and vivid prose, the (former) distinguished dance critic of the New York Times traces the development of the dance from its primitive beginnings through folk and early pageants and spectacles, to the latest forms (for 1946) , and includes dance in films. His ability to access archives of dance history enabled him to collect an amazingly complete group of pictures illustrating all phases of the dance. There are more than 260 superb shots. The book is in four parts: Basic dance, in which the elemental nature of all dance is discussed simply and intimately; Dance for the Sake of Dance, a charming discussion of folk dancing and ballroom dance; Dance as a Spectacle, covering all the significant trends and styles that have swept through the history of ballet; and last, Dance as a Means of Communication, with an especially brilliant critical history of American dance from Isadora Duncan to Denishawn down to the contemporary concert scene, plus a chapter on African-American Dance. 160 pages including index. The binding is fine, black with a silver outline of the dancer on the jacket. There is foxing on the page tops. The jacket has a 1/2" triangular piece missing at the lower left; chipping and light wear at the corners and spine ends. Foxing on the vertical edges and tops of flaps, and scuffing on the back; jacket is in a protective cover. 8 1/2" x 11

4 Merrill, Hugh The Blues Route
0688066119 / 9780688066116; Hugh Merrill set out in 1986 on a cross-country trek to retrace the migration of blues musicians from the rural South to the rest of the country. From the birthplace of the blues - Dockery Plantation and the juke joints of the Mississippi River Delta, to the crowded blues bars of Chicago's South side, he continues meeting and talking to blues musicians. He visited smoky dives on the fringe of New Orlean's French Quarter, dance bars featuring Zydeco (an amalgam of Cajun rythms and blues) , and the cocktail lounges of Oakland and Los Angeles. We meet the legends of blues and the new generation of performers struggling to preserve the music - this blues universe is to be relished by both aficionados and the uninitiated. 236 pages including 8 pages of photographs, no marks or tears. Price not clipped. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

5 Thompson, John J. Raised by Wolves: the Story of Christian Rock & Roll
1550224212 / 9781550224214; This is an insider's look at the birth, evolution and growing popularity of Christian rock music. As the counter-culture movement of the sixties gathered steam, one of its first splinter groups was the Jesus freaks. In addition to newly hip pastors, the scene produced a handful of musicians who brazenly coupled rock & roll music with lyrics that reflected a Christian world-view. Jesus music was born. But by the late sixties, Christian rock had been rejected by its forefathers and dismissed by mainstream pop culture. Legions of creative musicians suddenly found themselves orphaned - left to be raised by wolves. As the author argues, these musicians are the real rebels of rock & roll, living on the fringes of an underground Christian culture, and discovering what can be accomplished when art is combined with faith. Full of photographs that reveal the amazing diversity of the Christian rock scene, this volume presents a detailed exploration of the artists, the social conditions, and, above all, the music that has married Christianity and rock & roll for more than 30 years. 262 pages including an extensive index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
