6 Calder, Angus Gods, Mongrels, and Demons: 101 Brief but Essential Lives
1582344310 / 9781582344317; This book is an idiosyncratic and indespensable guide to history's most - and least - memorable characters. Inspired by the author's believe that "oddballs, headbangers, saints, nutters, philosophers, freaks and such like deserve to be drawn away from the periphery to the center of our consciousness. " Gods, Mongrels and Demons uses the famous, the infamous and the apparently marginal to tell us more about ourselves and our cultures than we'd find in the usual history book fare. With this book, Angus Calder has created an original, eccentric and richly entertaining work of reference for readers of all stripes. 438 pages including an index. The book is arranged alphabetically by name and has more information than one would expect on most entries. The jacket is worn at the corners and has minor bends at the spine ends. There is one 1/4" tear at the top right corner. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

7 Cox, Donald W. Hemlock's Cup: the Struggle for Death with Dignity
0879758082 / 9780879758080; Hemlock's Cup is the first history of the active euthanasia movement in America, as represented by its most visible proponent, the Hemlock Society. Donald W. Cox traces the growth of the society from its beginnings as a three-person cause to its current worldwide fame. The work of Derek Humphry, the society's founder, is reviewed and the publicity surrounding Dr. Jack Kevorkian and his controversial "suicide machine" is discussed. Cox also addresses the Washington (1991) and Califormnia (1992) initiatives to legalize doctor-assisted suicide and the ethical questions they pose. He reflects on the impact of the Quinlan and Cruzan cases to establish the "right to die" for all Americans and he explores the reasons for the delays in enacting living-will laws in various states. In addition, he examines the connections among AIDS, abortion, and assisted suicide, three major medical issues that are still debated today. 311 pages, including an index and several useful appendices, including a durable power of attorney for healthcare (living will) , and selected bibliography. There is a wealth of information contained in this book. The binding is an attractive blue leather-look cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Quicken Willmaker Plus 2009 Edition: Estate Planning Essentials (Book with Software), editors Of Nolo
8 editors Of Nolo Quicken Willmaker Plus 2009 Edition: Estate Planning Essentials (Book with Software)
This book includes a CD, along with the book in greater detail and explanation for wills, living trusts, living wills, powers of attorney, health care directives, final arrangements and forms for executors. Forms are developed with what is legal in your state, but you can modify and use your wording in many cases. Also included on another CD is The Executors Guide. I have a copy of this myself and have used it for additional documents like promissory notes. After you complete your documents it is advisable to run them past an attorney who specializes in wills and estates, or family law. Much less expensive than having them draw up the original documents. This software says it works through Microsoft Vista, but I used it on MS 7 with no problem. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

10 Hairston, Maxine C. Successful Writing Second Edition
This book explains why writing is an important way of learning and gives students a clear idea of the qualities readers expect in good prose. While suggesting that writers may use significantly different processes in doing different kinds of writing, it analyzes and illustrates the steps most writers go through when they compose. Professor Hairston stresses the importance of students' thinking about audience and purpose every time they write. She also suggests effective ways to begin different kinds of papers and points out options for exploring, developing, and organizing ideas. A new feature of this text is the chapter on revising, and this is illustrated with a student paper taken through three drafts with comments on each version. Includes index, there is a bit of underlining and some comments, all in pencil. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

14 Lantos, M. D. , John D. ; Meadow, M. D. , Ph. D. , William L. Neonatal Bioethics: the Moral Challenges of Medical Innovation
080188344X / 9780801883446; Neonatal intensive care has been one of the most morally controversial areas of medicine during the past thirty years. This study examines the interconnected development of four key aspects of neonatal intensive care: Medical advances, ethical analysis, legal scrutiny, and econometric evaluation. The authors assert that a dramatic shift in societal attitudes toward newborns and their medical care was a stimulus for and then a result of developments in the medical care of newborns. They divide their analysis into three eras of neonatal intensive care. The first, characterized by the rapid advance of medical technology from the late 1960s to the Baby Doe case of 1982, established neonatal care as a legitimate specialty of medical care, separate from the rest of pediatrics and medicine. The second era, beginning with the Baby Doe case stimulated efforts to establish a consistent federal standard on neonatal care decisions and raised important moral questions concerning the meaning of "futility" and "inhumane" treatment. In the third era, a consistent set of decision-making criteria and policies were established. Tracing the field's recent history, notable advances, and considerable challenges yet to be faced, the authors present neonatal bioethics as a paradigm of complex conversation among physicians, philosophers, policy makers, judges, and legislators which has led to responsible societal oversight of a controversial medical innovation. Bound in green cloth, 177 pages including notes and an index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
