The board's intent was to boost the school's image. However, they found themselves mired in a fight between the religious leaders and Russell's unapolagetic atheism and popular writings on "free love." While this event had few long-term repercussions, it does stand as a lesson in the difficulties of democracy; its causes say more than its effects. This is not only a tale about morals, but a tale with a moral. The problem pitted the spiritual truth of Bishop Manning against the scientific truth of Bertrand Russell; unfortunately, Bishop Manning's brand won. That there was an injustice done is clear.
