1 Martin, John The Dance The Story of the Dance in Pictures and Text
In magnificent pictures and vivid prose, the (former) distinguished dance critic of the New York Times traces the development of the dance from its primitive beginnings through folk and early pageants and spectacles, to the latest forms (for 1946), and includes dance in films. His ability to access archives of dance history enabled him to collect an amazingly complete group of pictures illustrating all phases of the dance. There are more than 260 superb shots. The book is in four parts: Basic dance, in which the elemental nature of all dance is discussed simply and intimately; Dance for the Sake of Dance, a charming discussion of folk dancing and ballroom dance; Dance as a Spectacle, covering all the significant trends and styles that have swept through the history of ballet; and last, Dance as a Means of Communication, with an especially brilliant critical history of American dance from Isadora Duncan to Denishawn down to the contemporary concert scene, plus a chapter on African-American Dance. 160 pages including index. The binding is fine, black with a silver outline of the dancer on the jacket. There is foxing on the page tops. The jacket has a 1/2" triangular piece missing at the lower left; chipping and light wear at the corners and spine ends. Foxing on the vertical edges and tops of flaps, and scuffing on the back; jacket is in a protective cover. 8 1/2" x 11

2 MacDonald, John D.; Greenberg, Martin H. (editor) The Good Old Stuff
0060150386 / 9780060150389; This volume is a selection of 13 of MacDonald's best mystery stories written between 1947 and 1952, at the beginning of his career. While many readers know of his success from recent books such as Cinnamon Skin and The Empty Copper See, few but the hardcore mystery addicts remember when MacDonald wrote for magazines. Each story has been chosen carefully to give readers a taste of his early best and showcase the range of his abilities in the mystery genre. The blue binding is fine. The blue jacket has a small nick at the bottom edge and two nicks on the front, one from a label. Light wear at the spine ends. Inside the jacket at the bottom there was some water and some blue from the book transferred to the inside jacket, and lightened the front board. 393 pages, no marks or tears. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
