In this, one of Robert Mirvish's finest novels, he has again utilized his knowledge of and feeling for the sea, and written an exceptional love story - by turns rough and tender, serene and violent, like the sea itself. When Steen Carton, a sailor on leave in Baltimore, meets Anita Corbit, a waitress on the Mariner's Bay. She was a young woman well acquainted with cold, hunger, and poverty. The attraction between the two was immediate, yet Anita's past experiences had made her determined not to be dependent upon men. Their relationship was a stormy one until the time Steen shipped out to Japan. They landed in Yokohama intent on a spree - but instead he met Miyoko - and experienced an idyll richly satisfying. But the time was 1940 and Steen's life took another turn; as he matured he tried to come to terms with himself, to reconcile his two worlds. 309 pages. Book spine has a tiny bit of sunning on both ends. The jacket has light wear at the corners, a small spot on the front; both spine ends show wear, and there is a 1 3/4" vertical tear from the spine top. NOT price clipped.
