1 Rice, Edward E. Wars of the Third Kind Conflict in Underdeveloped Countries
0520062361 / 9780520062368; Most of the armed conflicts since WWII have been neither conventional nor nuclear, but wars of a third kind, usually fought in the Third World and relying heavily, although not exclusively, on guerilla warfare. The author examines analytically a host of these conflicts from the American Revolution and the Huk rebellion to the Vietnam War and repeated conflicts in Central and Latin America. The author explores the origin of these wars, the motivation and organization of the people who fight them, their rural and popular nature, how and why guerrilla armies may be converted into regular armies, and the "natural history" of these wars. He concoludes with a careful and provocative analysis of the perils for the major powers of the "small" wars. 186 pages with index and notes. There is pencil underlining throughout the book. The jacket has light shelfwear at the bottom edge.
