John Marshall was a lawyer who attained the title of Secretary of State, and was basically running the country when Adams left Washington for Massachusetts to be with his sick wife. He was the first Justice to assert that the Supreme Court could hold actions of Congrress in violation of law. As Chief Justice he was to define the duties of the judiciary, which were in a muddled state. The book has light shelftwear on the corners and bottom of the spine.192 pages, no marks or tears. A bookplate on the fep has the prior owner's initials. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
