Seghers, Anna; Galston, James A. (translated from the German by) The Seventh Cross Seven men imprisoned in the Westhofen camp decide to attempt an escape. George Heisler, one of the escapees, is a communist; the narrative follows his travels across the countryside and to the rare citizen who is willing to take him in for a night. The other six escapees are gradually captured. The Seven Crosses refer to trees which are used for a subtle torture when the escaped prisoners are returned. A film by MGM, and starring Spencer Tracy, was produced from this book. 338 pages, red cloth binding.
