3 Ben-Dov, Meir; Naor, Mordechay; Anner, Zeev The Western Wall (Hakotel)
9650500553 / 9789650500559; What is the secret of the Western Wall? The simple, accepted answer is that it is the only remnant of the Temple which was destroyed by Titus and, as such, it is a memorial monument of Israel's days of religious and national glory in its own land. A more complicated answer is that the Wall is a symbol of the Jewish people which, like the wall, stands firm. This volume is intended to collect all the available information - ancient, historical and modern - on the Wall under one roof with an eye to the future. There has never appeared a volume which embraces history, archeology, architecture, religion, tradition, law and custom, travellers' accounts from ancient times until today, folk-tales, the struggle for the Wall from the end of the nineteenth century, the liberation of the Wall, the design of the new piazza, flora and fauna, literature and art, and a wide-ranging bibliography. This is all included, and the book is well-illustrated in black & white and color photographs, illustrations, and drawings. 245 pages including a select bibliography. The corners are lightly worn, and on the jacket there are a few small tears, a 3/4" tear at the top front, and a 1/2" tear at the bottom. The tears are repaired and the jacket is in a protective cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

4 Bradford, Ernle Paul the Traveller
156619377X / 9781566193771; With the narrative skill and superb sense of place and time for which he is famous, Ernle Bradford brings to life the man we know as Saint Paul - the thirteenth apostle and great Christian missionary of the first century. Born into the Jewish aristocracy of Asia Minor - he was the son of a Pharisee - it was inevitable that he should travel to Jerusalem to study in the Temple; perhaps it was also inevitable that he should have been part of the enraged crowd that stoned to death the first Christian martyr, Stephen. Bradford portrays Paul as a proud and opinionated man, and it took a miracle on the road to Damascus to convince him that his true master was the crucified Galilean whom men called Jesus. " 246 pages, indexed. The jacket back has a vertical line of tiny indents. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Lady Poverty, Breton O. F. M. , Valentine; Oligny O. F. M. , Paul J. (translated by)
5 Breton O. F. M. , Valentine; Oligny O. F. M. , Paul J. (translated by) Lady Poverty
To St. Francis, poverty, which most of us regard as a negative thing and an abstraction, was our Lady Poverty, a person and a playmate; yes, the bride of the religious. But there is a deeper reason why the saints loved poverty - because they were following our Lord Jesus Christ. Should not a Christ follower empty himself of all selfishness and adhere to God's will in obedience, so that he may be filled with all the fullness of God? Father Breton teaches the true scale of values in a Christian life in this classic book. Bound in cloth; there are two tiny holes at the top near the spine. The jacket has slight soiling to the front; the original price tag is on the front. Not price-clipped, in protective cover. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

6 Chaikin, Miriam Clouds of Glory: Legends & Stories about Bible Times
039574654X / 9780395746547; Where is God? Who are the angels? The Bible holds the answers to questions and puzzles raised in Bible text - if only you know how to look. The body of Jewish literature known as Midrash, which in Hebrew means "to search and explain, " consists of stories that have arisen to answer such perplexing questions. Established rabbinic Midrashim about the Book of Genesis are here retold with freshness, wit, and clarity. Chaikin recasts the Creation story, the story of Cain and Abel, the legend of Satan's fall from grace, the Emerald Book of Secrets, and many other Midrashim in a new narrative light. David Frampton's masterful woodcut illustrations in full color illuminate Miriam Chaikin's charming retellings. The world she creates lives on. Does the World Need the Jews? Rethinking Chosenness and American Jewish Identity, Gordis, Daniel
10 Gordis, Daniel Does the World Need the Jews? Rethinking Chosenness and American Jewish Identity
What would happen if the world woke up one day and there were simply no Jews left? Would the world be worse off? In this book, Rabbi Daniel Gordis suggests that one of the chief sources of malaise among contemporary Jews is that many cannot answer this critical question. Though many Jewish community leaders now speak of an American Jewish "continuity crisis, " Gordis sees a very different problem. The issue, he argues, is not continuity, but identity. American Jews simply have no conception of why they matter or what their tradition stands for. Includes glossary, further reading and index. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

15 Jenkins, Philip New Anti-Catholicism, The: the Last Acceptable Prejudice
0195154800 / 9780195154801; Anti-Catholicism has a long history in America. And as Philip Jenkins argues in The New Anti-Catholicism, this virulent strain of hatred - once thought dead - is alive and well in our nation, but few people seem to notice, or care. A statement that is seen as racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, or homophobic can haunt a speaker for years, writes Jenkins, but it is still possible to make hostile and vituperative public statements about Roman Catholicism without fear of serious repercussions. Jenkins shines a light on anti-Catholic sentiment in American society and illumiates its causes, looking closely at gay and feminist anti-Catholicism, anti-Catholic rhetoric and imagery in the media, and the anti-Catholicism of the academic world. It was said that with the election of John F. Kennedy, anti-Catholicism in America was dead. This provocative book corrects that illusion, drawing attention to this important issue. 258 pages, including an index. The black cover shows some rubbing. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

17 Kaiser, Robert Blair A Church in Search of Itself: Benedict XVI and the Battle for the Future
0375410643 / 9780375410642; A hugely informed look at the intensifying struggle over the future of the Catholic Church. Despite the popularity of John Paul II, opposition to many of his policies had hardened among Catholics by the time of his death. The Church had become more doctrinaire, the voices of millions of dissenters ignored. Now Robert Blair Kaiser examines the most important and divisive issues confronting the Church. He also gives in-depth portraits of six of the cardinals who gathered in Rome in April 2005 to choose a new pope. With passion and heartfelt concern, the author brilliantly illuminates the issues and the combatants in the battle for the souls of the Catholic world. 261 pages including an index. 18 Lahaye, Tim F. ; Halliday, Steve The Merciful God of Prophecy: His Loving Plan for You in the End Times
0446530247 / 9780446530248; A profound reading of the significance of prophecy as it relates to life and godliness - a bright ray of hope amid the pallor of contemporary pessimism and despair. " - Paige Patterson, President of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC. Most books on biblical prophecy are filled with doom and gloom. Their focus is on the cataclysmic events foretold in Scripture: Wars, famines, floods, and earthquakes will rock Planet Earth in its last days, right up to Armageddon and the personal return of Jesus Christ. Bestselling author Tim LaHaye believes that this viewpoint is confusing at best and misrepresents God's true, merciful nature and purposes for humanity. Offering a very different perspective, the author shows his readers how the Lord of Creation wants us to have a future filled with hope, optimism, and blessing. And how this can be understood only when we see the big picture of the wonderful plan God has for mankind. 301 pages, including notes, questions and answers, and a discussion guide. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

24 Reeves, John The St. Matthew Passion: a Text for Voices
0802839002 / 9780802839008; Musical settings of the story of Christ's Passion, as recounted by St. Matthew, date back to antiquity. First incorporated into the liturgy as a chant for Palm Sunday, the Passion text of St. Matthew developed over the centuries into elaborate settings for choir and soloists with instrumental accompaniment. J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion is widely acknowledged as the pinnacle of this tradition and, even more, as one of the greatest achievements of Western music. Award-winning poet John Reeves here offers 21 verse meditations directly inspired by Bach's masterpiece. Written and arranged to be heard as well as read, these eloquent poems capture Reeve's own experience of hearing Bach's work performed in various cities around the world. The poems are introduced and linked by short passages of prose. These identify the cities visited by Reeves, annotate Bach's response to the Passion as a believer and composer, evoke the various church liturgies commemorating the Passion, and relate each poem to the point reached in the Passion story. The inclusion of a fine English translation of Bach's libretto at the end of the volume adds value to Reeve's creative work. 108 pages, this is a beautifully-bound book with a translucent cover. The front inside flap corners have been folded in a bit. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

0060671122 / 9780060671129; From the book: "The pilgrim's progress is both an interior journey, a spiritual exercise, and a physical journey toward an actual site imbued with a divine character. The condition of the pilgrim, in fact, comes remarkably close to that of the hero. By abandoning familiar, worldly surroundings, submitting (oneself) to physical hardship and sometimes considerable danger, paying homage or doing penance at a holy site, pilgrims, like heroes, know that they will return from their odyssey in some way renewed, or at least inwardly changed.
