1 Canada
0862834465 / 9780862834463; If you've ever considered going to Canada, this book will convince you. The photography is excellent and the text at the beginning provides basic historic information about Canada. The land and the surrounding seas are more than just spectacular; they are the nation's raison d'etre. The bountiful waters of the Grand Banks first drew fishermen of Europe, the creatures of the forest provided materials for a thriving fur trade, and the rich soils of the prairies produce a large proportion of the world's wheat. But beyond that, Canada is a significant exporter of diamonds (not in the book) . Profits are shared with the local Native Indian tribes, and they work in winter as well, pulling diamonds from the depths of a frozen lake. Native Indian tribes survive in Canada, and there are some beautiful photographs of them and their works. The binding is deep blue, and has photographs on the inside covers as well. The binding has minor wear at the corners and one small bump at the top. The jacket has minor wear to one corner and a small closed horizontal tear at the spine, repaired. Unpaginated, approximately 90 pages, most of them full-color photographs. Identification of photos shows up about every third page, so they can describe the previous two, present two, and next two pages using as little white space as possible. A joy to read and page through! 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

2 Choedon, Yeshi; Norbu, Dawa Tibet
8174370943 / 9788174370945; The very mention of Tibet evokes in the mind of the reader the image of a nation perilously situated in a geo-political matrix caught in the crossfire of history. However, this book reaches beyond immediate history to narrate Tibet's fascinating story of multiple traditions overlaid with legend, folklore, religious ceremony and festivals, and a natural beauty which leaves onlookers breathless. The history of the periods prior to and following the emergence of a theocratic polity, permeating every aspect of society in a world increasingly marked by the declining influence of religion, are some of the themes skillfully woven into this book. Tibetan life, culture and society are revealed through outstanding photographs on the "roof of the world. " The illustrations provide that rich synthesis of history, tradition and popular memory with everyday fables and symbolisms which make the country come alive. Pictorial cover.; Folio - over 12 - 15" tall

3 Clifford, William (edited by) The Whole Wide World
This fascinating treasury of great travel writings includes 72 double-page full color illustrations and over 100 half tones. The photographs are beautiful, the writing is superb. Although this book is from the '60's the places I've been to recently held up quite nicely in their descriptions. For places I'll never go the illustrations and vivid writing, along with quotes here and there as appropriate, make for a wonderful book to sink into for an evening. 456 pages, all clean and bright. Could be used in home teaching. The cloth binding is tight but slightly cocked. The jacket top is worn, especially at the corners where there are small tears. Slight shelfwear at the bottom. The spine top is worn with a small tear in front and about a 1" tear in the back. The bottom spine is chipped. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

5 De Vries, Clare Of Cats and Kings
1582342075 / 9781582342078; Fed up with looking for the perfect man, Clare de Vries sets off with a more achievable goal in mind - to find the perfect cat. In the sequal to I & Claudius - Clare de Vries' journey across the USA with her beloved brown Burmese - our heroine travels through Burma and Thailand in search of a replacement for her dearly departed Claudius. Veering from nasty dives to luxurious spas and dodging lecherous cat breeders and ruthless elephant traders, Clare learns the basic tenets of Buddhism, receives a liberal dousing at the annual Thingyan celebrations, and learns the history of the precious Siamese/Burmese cats and the royals who nurtured them. She comes up against a monastery of jumping cats in Inle, and a profusion of nats at Mount Popa, but it isn't until she arrives at a remote temple in Thailand that she discovers what she's been seeking: The perfect kittens. All she has to do is give a donation to the monk who owns them - or so she thinks. If you've ever fallen under a cat's spell, you'll love this book. 305 pages. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

7 Freuchen, Peter Book of the Eskimos
Peter Freuchen spent considerable time with the Eskimos, from his first to Greenland in 1906 up to the time of his death in 1957. Not only was he very concerned with the life and health of the Eskimos, he enjoyed their company and they enjoyed his, treating him as an equal while hunting. He married an Eskimo woman, who apparently died about 10 years later. His third wife wrote a knowledgeable preface to this book. Having read a little of it, Freuchen wrote expanding on his notes from his trips and it is very readable, like talking to a friend in a cozy setting. The cover is illustrated, as is the spine. The spine ends are wrinkled, the top front corner is worn and the other corners are a bit curled in. The blue cloth has sunned a bit, front and back, and there is a damp stain which does not go through to the text. The spine is also lightly sunned but very clean. This is a BOMC volume. Photos, decorated endpapers. 14 pages of photos. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall

12 Robertson, Struan; Operation Hunger (Organization) The Cold Choice: Pictures of a South African Reality
0865432171 / 9780865432178; This book is the record of four years' travelling with Operation Hunger teams around South Africa. The flip side of the glossy tourist-view of the country, this book shows South Africa as it is experienced by the majority of its people: A succession of tumbledown relocation camps and overcrowded townships with bad roads, no sewage, minimal clean water and no street lighting. Yet, in this depressing squalor, the author found something more rewarding than beautiful tourist views. 'When I began this project I expected to record suffering and injustice. There was plenty of both but what struck me was the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the worst relocation camps such as Tentergate or Padstowe I found people who not only managed to survive but to find hope and meaning in their lives. I was humbled by them'. Richly illustrated throughout the text. ; 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall

17 Wright, Larry; Wright, Patricia Bonfires & Beacons: Great Lakes Lighthouses
1550461850 / 9781550461855; Ships have always been at the mercy of weather and water. In the early days of many communities, fishing families built bonfires on hilltops or along the shoreline to lead boats home, but as commerce developed, more and larger vesels were put at risk. The first lighthouse on the Great Lakes was a structure completed on Lake Ontario in 1804. Today, surviving lighthouses along the 8, 000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline range in size from the five Tall Lighthouses in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois to the short wooden towers of Lake Huron's Georgian Bay. Each lighthouse is photographed in full color, with a short history on the opposite page. 96 pages including bibliography. A beautifully photographed and printed book. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
